Ceramics and Semis Surge as Logistics Shock Drags Broader Tokyo Market — November 02, 2026

Market Overview

Tokyo equities delivered a split session on November 2, 2026, with sharp gains in ceramics, semiconductors, and consumer staples offset by steep losses in warehousing, logistics, and electrical equipment. The day’s action was defined less by broad directional momentum and more by violent rotations at the stock and sector level, suggesting investors were responding to company-specific catalysts rather than a unified macro theme. Overall breadth was mixed, leaving the Nikkei 225 caught between double-digit gainers and double-digit decliners.

Top Gainers

The day’s standout performer was NGK Corp (5333), which surged +10.95% to lead the entire Nikkei 225. The ceramics specialist was joined by fellow materials name Nippon Electric Glass (5214), up +6.07%, reflecting a broader bid for industrial materials stocks. Semiconductor-linked names were also firmly in favour: Lasertec Corp (6920) climbed +8.01% and Tokyo Electron (8035) added +5.16%, signalling renewed appetite for chipmaking equipment after recent sector volatility.

Consumer names offered further colour on the day. Sapporo Breweries (2501) rose +7.72%, making it one of the more surprising gainers and lending support to the food sector’s positive close. On the healthcare front, Daiichi Sankyo (4568) gained +5.03% and Sumitomo Pharma (4506) added +4.67%, keeping pharmaceuticals in positive territory. Panasonic Holdings (6752) rose +5.41%, a notable bright spot within an otherwise pressured electrical equipment sector. Retail also caught a lift from J Front Retailing (3086), which advanced +5.13%.

Top Decliners

The session’s most jarring move came from SCREEN Holdings (7735), which collapsed -18.96% — the sharpest single-day loss on the Nikkei 225. The semiconductor equipment maker’s dramatic fall stood in stark contrast to gains posted by peers Lasertec and Tokyo Electron, pointing strongly to a company-specific development. Mitsubishi Logistics Corp (9301) suffered a heavy -14.00% decline, echoing the severe underperformance of the warehousing and logistics sector as a whole. Alps Alpine (6770) shed -10.96%, adding to pressure on the electronics components space.

Other notable laggards included Sumitomo Chemical (4005), down -9.47%, and Recruit Holdings (6098), which fell -6.41%. Precision instrument stalwarts Hoya Corp (7741), Kyocera (6971), Seiko Epson (6724), and Keyence (6861) all registered meaningful losses, reinforcing weakness across the high-tech components universe.

Sector Snapshot

Ceramics led all sectors with an average gain of +2.96%, buoyed by NGK Corp and Nippon Electric Glass. Gas (+1.50%), food (+1.42%), and rubber (+1.25%) also closed in positive territory, as did transportation equipment (+1.05%) and pharmaceuticals (+0.92%).

On the losing end, warehousing and logistics was by far the worst-performing sector, plunging -7.04% — a dramatic outlier that dragged on overall sentiment. Electrical equipment fell -1.31%, while banks (-1.44%), trading companies (-1.47%), shipping (-1.47%), oil and gas (-1.59%), and nonferrous metals (-1.92%) all closed meaningfully lower. Services and other financials also underperformed, suggesting some rotation away from growth and financial exposure.
