Tech and Digital Services Power Broad Gains as Banks and Telecoms Drag — October 09, 2026

Market Overview

Japanese equities staged a broadly constructive session on October 9, 2026, with the technology and services sectors providing strong upward momentum across the Nikkei 225. The day’s trading painted a divided picture: digital services, IT consulting, and gaming names surged to the top of the leaderboard, while financials, telecommunications, and electronic components faced meaningful selling pressure. The advance was widespread across defensive and cyclical sectors alike, though the breadth of gains was tempered by sharp losses in a handful of heavyweight names.

Top Gainers

The technology and digital services cohort dominated the winners’ board, with SHIFT INC (3697) leading all Nikkei 225 constituents with a gain of +6.48%, reflecting continued investor appetite for software quality assurance and IT services. Nomura Research Institute (4307) followed closely at +5.09%, reinforcing the theme of demand for high-value consulting and systems integration capabilities. Cybersecurity specialist Trend Micro (4704) rose +4.91%, while management consulting firm BayCurrent Inc (6532) added +4.82%.

Semiconductor equipment maker Lasertec Corp (6920) gained +4.18% and peer SCREEN Holdings (7735) climbed +3.99%, signalling selective recovery interest in the chip-related space. On the consumer side, Nintendo (7974) rose +3.76% and Konami Group (9766) added +3.54%, suggesting renewed enthusiasm for Japan’s entertainment sector. Japan Tobacco Inc (2914) advanced +3.88%, standing out as a defensive bright spot, while internet platform operator LY Corporation (4689) rounded out the top ten with a gain of +3.71%.

Top Decliners

The session’s losses were concentrated in retail, semiconductors, chemicals, and financials. Fast Retailing (9983) was the steepest faller among blue chips, dropping -4.04%, a notable reversal for the Uniqlo parent given its significant index weighting. Renesas Electronics (6723) slid -4.00%, bucking the modest recovery seen in some chip equipment names. SoftBank Group (9984) fell -3.92%, while speciality chemicals firm Asahi Kasei (3407) declined -3.94%. Electronic components makers also came under pressure, with Murata Manufacturing (6981) off -3.59%, ROHM (6963) down -3.18%, and TDK Corp (6762) losing -2.54%, pointing to ongoing caution around global hardware demand.

Sector Snapshot

At the sector level, Services (+2.50%) was the clear outperformer of the day, driven by the strong showing from IT consulting and software names. Shipping (+2.38%) posted the second-best sector gain, suggesting freight demand optimism, while Food (+1.57%) and Land Transportation (+1.02%) offered steady defensive support.

At the other end of the spectrum, Banks (-1.33%) were the weakest sector, continuing a pattern of pressure on financial stocks. Telecommunications (-0.90%) and Nonferrous Metals (-0.79%) also underperformed, as did Precision Instruments (-0.25%) and Securities (-0.29%). The divergence between thriving digital services and struggling traditional financials and components makers underscores a rotation in investor preference toward software, consulting, and asset-light business models.
